Scout
*This quote is often attributed to Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, but when you look for words of wisdom by this great man, the quote is oddly missing. B-P was a great military leader who believed in training. He started the Wood Badge course at Gilwell in September 1919 so that Scoutmasters would be well-trained. Regardless of how this quote came to be associated with B-P, it is obvious that training was a key to all he did. We continue that tradition in Troop 77 by being a 100% trained troop and encourage all of our Scouts, Scouters, and parents to never stop learning.
What does it take to be a trained leader?
Troop 321 requires every adult to be 100% trained in their position. We have online training segments and in person often weekend camping segments to our training. Why is that?
The difference between units whose leaders are well-trained and those who have a low percentage of trained leaders is staggering. Oftentimes those poorly trained units don't even see how bad things really are until they fail or come close to failing. A leader may be an Eagle Scout or have served in the military, but all that means is that person knows how their Troop was run when they were young or that they know how the military operates. Scouts BSA is not a paramilitary organization. Scouting was founded by a military hero, and you can see some similarities, but he always maintained that he was not training youth for for military service, but to become useful citizens. Personal experiences make us who we are, but personal experiences alone do not make a trained Scout leader. We need to know how the BSA expects the program to be run and to do that you must be trained.
